Introduction to the Architecture Design Challenge
Welcome to the Architecture Design Challenge, where students explore the exciting world of designing homes. Using the free tool, Planner 5D, students will learn how to create floor plans, design rooms, and furnish their own virtual homes in both 2D and 3D. This challenge is designed to give students a hands-on experience in architecture and home design, helping them understand the basics of creating comfortable, functional living spaces.
Why Architecture Design Matters
Designing a home is more than just picking out furniture or deciding where the walls go. It’s about creating a space that feels livable and practical. In this challenge, students will learn how to plan a home from scratch, understanding how each room fits together, where doors and windows should go, and how to furnish it all while thinking about both style and function. This will give them the skills to approach design projects thoughtfully and with real-world awareness.
Learning Planner 5D: A Design Tool for the Future

At the core of this challenge is Planner 5D, a powerful yet easy-to-use tool that allows students to:

• Design rooms like kitchens, bedrooms, and living spaces.

• Place doors and windows, choosing where light and air will enter the house.

• Furnish homes with different styles, from modern to bohemian, helping students develop a sense of taste in interior design.

• Switch between 2D and 3D views to see their designs come to life.

Planner 5D is similar to tools used by architects and designers in the real world, helping students get comfortable with industry-standard practices.

The Home Design Process: From Floor Plan to Furnished Home

The challenge walks students through each step of home design, making the process simple and clear:

Step 1: Floor Planning – Students create a basic layout of the home, deciding where rooms and hallways will go.

Step 2: Room Design – They will dive into designing each room, from bedrooms to kitchens, choosing things like the type of flooring, walls, and furniture.

Step 3: Style Selection – Students will explore different design styles, learning what makes a home look modern, industrial, or bohemian.

Step 4: 3D Visualization – Finally, they will bring their homes to life in 3D, seeing how all their decisions fit together into a complete, livable space.

This process teaches students how to think critically and creatively about the spaces they live in.

Skills Your Teenager Will Gain
By participating in the Architecture Design Challenge, students will develop valuable skills, including:
• Attention to Detail: Learning to design every part of a home from the floors to the ceilings.
• Creative Thinking: Deciding how to make a space both functional and visually appealing.
• Problem-Solving: Managing dimensions, cost, and design decisions.
• Familiarity with Design Software: Gaining comfort with using CAD programs like Planner 5D.

Real-World Applications and Benefits

This challenge doesn’t just teach students how to design homes—it introduces them to the broader world of architecture and design-driven industries. Students will:

• Understand how homes are designed to be functional, not just beautiful.

• Get a feel for working with design software that professionals use in real construction projects.

• See how creative ideas can be turned into practical, real-world designs.

These experiences will provide a foundation for students who may one day pursue careers in design, architecture, or engineering.

Preparing for Future Careers in Design and Architecture
By the end of this challenge, students will have a solid understanding of the basics of home design and the role that software plays in bringing designs to life. They will be ready to take their skills into future projects, whether they are designing something small like a room or thinking bigger with whole buildings. This experience gives them a real taste of what it’s like to work in design and architecture.
